Many Detroit Lions players who have been banged up with injuries, such as wide receiver Calvin Johnson and quarterback Matthew Stafford, were able to participate, though there was no official injury report. "Neither guy was 100-percent, but both of them came out and both of them were able to get out on the practice field today," said Lions HC Jim Schwartz of Johnson and Stafford. "I'm optimistic both of them would be without limitation on Sunday, but at this time of the year, (they will be) about as full-speed as you can be. Everybody's banged up or beat up a little bit." Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz says he's optimistic that wide receiver Calvin Johnson and running back Kevin Smith will play Sunday at Seattle. Johnson has missed Detroit's past two games with a sore right knee but practiced all week. Smith, who injured a shoulder in last weekend's 17-10 loss to St. Louis, missed Wednesday's practice but took part in workouts Thursday and Friday. Quarterback Matthew Stafford was limited in practice this week by a sore right knee but is expected to play against the Seahawks. (AP)

The Matthew Stafford watch isn't quite over. Detroit HC Jim Schwartz said the rookie quarterback had no problems after returning from a right knee injury, but the Lions will continue to monitor him for setbacks. "There's been nothing," Schwartz said. "But is he totally out of the woods? Is this behind him? Probably not yet. He probably still has treatments and things like that. I don't know for how long." Wide receiver Calvin Johnson remains day to day with a right knee injury. "He's getting closer," Schwartz said. (Detroit Free Press)

Detroit Lions rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford and receiver Calvin Johnson did not practice on Thursday. Johnson was on the field in a warmup suit while Stafford wasn't even at the practice. While the Lions won't comment on the players' status for Sunday's game against the Packers, it appears unlikely either will play. Both Stafford and Johnson are recovering from right knee injuries. The Lions returned to practice Wednesday morning in preparation for Sunday's game at Green Bay. And so did quarterback Matthew Stafford, though not completely. The Lions' rookie No. 1 overall pick took some first-team snaps during the early portion of drills that were open to the media. Stafford started the team's first four games but sat out last week against Pittsburgh after suffering a partially dislocated right kneecap in an Oct. 4 loss at Chicago. "He's improving; he's doing a little bit more each day that we're able to get him out on the field," said coach Jim Schwartz, who won't rule Stafford in -- or out -- for this week's game against the Packers. "The decision hasn't been made yet. We've got a long way to go before Sunday. There's definitely ground that needs to be covered between now and then." If Stafford can't play, the Lions will go with veteran Daunte Culpepper again at quarterback. Culpepper was 23-of-37 for 282 yards with one touchdown and one interception in the 28-20 loss to Pittsburgh. He also was sacked seven times, including three consecutive plays on the Lions' final possession. (The Detroit News)
Nicholas J. Cotsonika, of the Detroit Free Press, reports Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz reiterated Monday, Oct. 12, that QB Matthew Stafford (knee) remains the teams starting quarterback. However, Staffords status for Week 6 remains uncertain with a knee injury. Schwartz said the team would see how much Stafford practices and how his knee progresses throughout the week. Stafford does not necessarily need to be 100 percent, but must be mobile enough to escape trouble and protect himself. If he can't play, QB Daunte Culpepper would start.

Even though the Detroit Lions list rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford as day-to-day because of his knee injury, you get the feeling the team will be cautious about his long-term welfare and sit him for a couple of weeks. Stafford's right kneecap popped out of the socket Sunday in a loss to the Chicago Bears. When he was in high school, he suffered a similar injury horsing around with friends. The injury is not believed to be serious, but there is no reason to risk further injury. With a bye week coming in two weeks, it might be safer for the Lions to use Daunte Culpepper and then bring Stafford back after the bye week. (ESPN.com)

Carlos Monarrez, of the Detroit Free Press, reports Detroit Lions QB Daunte Culpepper issued a statement Tuesday, Sept. 8, in support of head coach Jim Schwartzs decision to start QB Matthew Stafford. "My position is that if you want to be the best you have to beat the best," Culpepper said in the statement. "Coach Schwartz gave me a fair opportunity to compete for the starting job and now the decision has been made that Matt is the best quarterback in Detroit. I support the decision and I am ready to settle into my role. Matt is a great guy and a talented young quarterback. I am confident that he will lead this team to plenty of victories in Detroit for a long time to come. I look forward to helping Matt in that mission in any way that I can this year."
Matthew Stafford won the Lions' quarterback derby. Daunte Culpepper didn't lose the job. That's what Detroit's new coach, Jim Schwartz, emphasized Monday when he made the No. 1 overall draft pick the starter for Sunday in New Orleans, when the Lions try to win for the first time in 21 months. "I've had a lot of very tough decisions in the last few days -- guys making the 53-man roster or not making it -- but none more difficult than at quarterback," he said. "We announced to our team this morning that Matt Stafford is going to be our starting quarterback." One of the factors that helped Schwartz make his decision was the 21-year-old rookie's chemistry with Detroit's biggest offensive weapon, Calvin Johnson. "I think he had 15 snaps in the preseason with Calvin, and you could already see what was possible there," Schwartz said. "The big plays were always there." While Schwartz repeatedly mentioned his comfort with the possibility of having to play Culpepper, he stressed that Stafford was not going to be on a short leash. "This isn't an internship," he said. "This isn't a trial basis. He's our starting quarterback. We said that, to win the job, he had to be ready, and he had to be our best quarterback, and that's what he has shown." (ESPN)
