Many Detroit Lions players who have been banged up with injuries, such as wide receiver Calvin Johnson and quarterback Matthew Stafford, were able to participate, though there was no official injury report. "Neither guy was 100-percent, but both of them came out and both of them were able to get out on the practice field today," said Lions HC Jim Schwartz of Johnson and Stafford. "I'm optimistic both of them would be without limitation on Sunday, but at this time of the year, (they will be) about as full-speed as you can be. Everybody's banged up or beat up a little bit." Lions coach Jim Schwartz is expecting Calvin Johnson (hand, knee) and Matthew Stafford (knee) to be available for Sunday's game at Cincinnati.
Calvin Johnson (knee, hand) and Matthew Stafford (shoulder) both sat out Lions practice Tuesday.
Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz says he's optimistic that wide receiver Calvin Johnson and running back Kevin Smith will play Sunday at Seattle. Johnson has missed Detroit's past two games with a sore right knee but practiced all week. Smith, who injured a shoulder in last weekend's 17-10 loss to St. Louis, missed Wednesday's practice but took part in workouts Thursday and Friday. Quarterback Matthew Stafford was limited in practice this week by a sore right knee but is expected to play against the Seahawks. (AP)

The Matthew Stafford watch isn't quite over. Detroit HC Jim Schwartz said the rookie quarterback had no problems after returning from a right knee injury, but the Lions will continue to monitor him for setbacks. "There's been nothing," Schwartz said. "But is he totally out of the woods? Is this behind him? Probably not yet. He probably still has treatments and things like that. I don't know for how long." Wide receiver Calvin Johnson remains day to day with a right knee injury. "He's getting closer," Schwartz said. (Detroit Free Press)
Matt Stafford has missed the last two games with a knee injury, and with backup Daunte Culpepper (hamstring) also at less than 100 percent, Schwartz is going to make the St. Louis Rams try to prepare for Stafford, Culpepper and third-stringer Drew Stanton. Stafford took part in the individual drills that are open to the media, but acknowledged that he wasn't fully involved in the full-team portion of the session. His biggest target, Calvin Johnson, is also recovering from a knee injury. He was limited to playing catch on the sidelines with a Lions staffer during the early portion of practice. "I did exactly as much as coach said I did," Johnson said. "I feel a lot better than I did a week ago, so I'm definitely optimistic, but I'm not positive. I'll see what I can do tomorrow." (AP)

Detroit Lions rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford and receiver Calvin Johnson did not practice on Thursday. Johnson was on the field in a warmup suit while Stafford wasn't even at the practice. While the Lions won't comment on the players' status for Sunday's game against the Packers, it appears unlikely either will play. Both Stafford and Johnson are recovering from right knee injuries. Matthew Stafford won the Lions' quarterback derby. Daunte Culpepper didn't lose the job. That's what Detroit's new coach, Jim Schwartz, emphasized Monday when he made the No. 1 overall draft pick the starter for Sunday in New Orleans, when the Lions try to win for the first time in 21 months. "I've had a lot of very tough decisions in the last few days -- guys making the 53-man roster or not making it -- but none more difficult than at quarterback," he said. "We announced to our team this morning that Matt Stafford is going to be our starting quarterback." One of the factors that helped Schwartz make his decision was the 21-year-old rookie's chemistry with Detroit's biggest offensive weapon, Calvin Johnson. "I think he had 15 snaps in the preseason with Calvin, and you could already see what was possible there," Schwartz said. "The big plays were always there." While Schwartz repeatedly mentioned his comfort with the possibility of having to play Culpepper, he stressed that Stafford was not going to be on a short leash. "This isn't an internship," he said. "This isn't a trial basis. He's our starting quarterback. We said that, to win the job, he had to be ready, and he had to be our best quarterback, and that's what he has shown." (ESPN)
