All of these guys were expected to be solid fantasy contributors this season, but none of them have lived up to the hype.
Add to the list in the comments section if you think someone else should be mentioned.
1. Brian Westbrook, PHI – 381 TTL YDS, 2 TD
After another solid season in ‘08, Westbrook was expected to give his fantasy owners a good option each week again this year. Well, that hasn’t happened. He’s only played in six games this season due to a concussion and other injuries, and he hasn’t looked that great when he has been in the lineup. If he can stay off the injured list, I still think he could have another good season or two. He’ll probably never be worthy of a first round pick again, though.
Remaining Games (rushing def rank): @NYG (10), SF (5), DEN (16), @DAL (9)
2. Clinton Portis, WAS – 551 TTL YDS, 2 TD
If you watched Portis play this season, you know that he has lost the speed he once had and all he has left is his intelligence. Injuries definitely slowed him down this year (again), but he’s just not good enough anymore to be drafted in the first few rounds. I have a feeling that the Redskins will replace him this offseason.
Portis was placed on the IR this week, so he’s done for the season.
3. Steve Slaton, HOU – 854 TTL YDS, 7 TD
Slaton had a fantastic rookie year, and most fantasy owners expected him to have an even better season this year. He did get better in the passing game, but he didn’t have one 100-yard game on the ground this season. He didn’t even score a TD until Week 4. I expect Slaton to have a pretty decent career, but my expectations are a lot lower now.
Slaton is done for the year with a neck injury.
4. Ladainian Tomlinson, SD – 627 TTL YDS, 9 TD
LT has turned his season around a bit in recent weeks (6 touchdowns in his last four games), but he’s still been a letdown on the overall. He was a first rounder in most leagues, but he’s not even a top 20 fantasy RB this season. He’ll be 31 next year, so expect him to continue to decline.
Remaining Games: @DAL (9), CIN (1), @TEN (8), WAS (24)
5. Marion Barber, DAL – 813 TTL YDS, 4 TD
It’s really odd that Barber’s numbers have declined the past two seasons because he’s only 26. The fact that he’s sharing the carries doesn’t help, but that’s mostly on him because he hasn’t proven that he can handle the full load. I still think he’ll be a good option in the future, but he’s going to have to score on a more consistent basis to be a #1 guy again.
Remaining Games: SD (21), @NO (20), @WAS (24), PHI (7)
