Quick Hits- the Week in Review: Jobs on the Line, Injuries Taking Their Toll, and a Premature End

Jamal Lewis

Jamal Lewis, RB, CLE- “Cleveland’s punishing running back, who announced last month that he planned to retire following this season, was placed on injured reserve Wednesday with post-concussion symptoms, a premature and unceremonious ending to his illustrious NFL career.” (Yahoo)

Wade Phillips, Head Coach, DAL- “Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Wednesday that if his team performs well, Wade Phillips’ future as head coach becomes secure. Phillips, when told of those statements, spoke of a general lack of respect for his overall record.” (ESPN)

Kurt Warner, QB, ARI- “Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt said he doesn’t expect to decide who will start at quarterback on Sunday night against the Minnesota Vikings until just before game time. Kurt Warner and Matt Leinart split practice time with the starters again on Thursday, and Whisenhunt said he has made no decision. (FOX)

Mark Sanchez, QB, NYJ- “Mark Sanchez threw a go-ahead touchdown pass to Braylon Edwards before hurting his right knee, and the New York Jets’ stingy defense finished the job in a 19-13 victory against the Buffalo Bills on Thursday night. Sanchez went 7 of 15 for 104 yards and a 13-yard scoring strike to Edwards that put the Jets up 16-10 late in the first half. But the rookie first-round pick was knocked out of the game when he injured his knee diving headfirst on an 8-yard run early in the third quarter.” (CBS)

Jay Cutler, QB, CHI- “Jay Cutler said there’s no need for Brian Urlacher to apologize. He understands the linebacker’s frustration, and if there’s any ill will between the Chicago Bears’ stars, the quarterback passed on confirming it.” (ESPN)

Darren Sharper, DB, NO- “It’s a trendy topic of conversation to debate whether the Saints have a chance at the perfect 16-0 record this season. It might be trendy, but it’s not what the Saints are focused on…Sharper told the NFL Network Wednesday that the 11-0 Saints have learned something from the 2007 Patriots, who went undefeated before the loss to the Giants in Super Bowl XLII.” (NFL)

Steven Jackson, RB, STL- “Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo was hopeful that Jackson would practice Thursday, although he said the team will ‘tread lightly’ with the running back, who’s in a similar position to last week when he was held out of practice all week but was able to play against the Seahawks, gaining 116 total yards with a touchdown.” (NFL)

Michael Vick, QB, PHI- “No one is quite sure what kind of reception Michael Vick will get when he returns to the Georgia Dome for the first time since serving 18 months in federal prison for dog fighting. After being out of the league for two seasons, the former Falcons quarterback is now a little-used backup for the Philadelphia Eagles (7-4), who face the Falcons (6-5) Sunday in a crucial matchup of NFC playoff contenders.” (Yahoo)

Mat Moore, QB, CAR- “Delhomme has a broken finger on his throwing hand, so Matt Moore is expected to start at quarterback for the Carolina Panthers on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.” (FFToolbox)

Justin Gage, WR, TEN, and Kenny Britt, WR, TEN- “There is no question that the most productive Tennessee Titans receiver in the past two weeks has been rookie Kenny Britt…But he may lose his starting spot with the possible return of Justin Gage this weekend.” (FFToolbox)

LeSean McCoy, RB, PHI- “The Philadelphia Eagles acted at an opportune time when they drafted running back LeSean McCoy in the second round, taking him 53rd overall, to back up Brian Westbrook.” (USAToday)

Adrian Peterson, RB, MIN- “Minnesota Vikings star running back Adrian Peterson could lose his driver’s license after police clocked him driving at 109 mph — nearly twice the posted speed limit — on a suburban Minneapolis highway last weekend.” (USAToday)

Antonio Cromartie, DB, SD- “Police said Thursday there is not enough evidence to prove a bar patron’s claim that San Diego Chargers cornerback Antonio Cromartie hit him in the head with a champagne bottle hours after the team’s victory at Denver.” (USAToday)

Hines Ward, WR, PIT- “…Pittsburgh’s veteran receiver said at a team meeting that he regretted creating a distraction when he questioned why a concussion had kept Roethlisberger from playing against Baltimore on Sunday night, a game the struggling Steelers lost in overtime.” (USAToday)

Tony Romo, QB, DAL- “Can Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo finally play his best football when it matters most? The Romo-unfriendly month of December has arrived cold and slippery starting with Sunday’s meeting at the New York Giants. Romo is 5-8 in December with 19 interceptions and 0-2 in the postseason.” (USAToday)
