Player Profile: Joseph Addai

joseph addai

At the beginning of this season I am sure many people waited till the later rounds to pick up Joseph Addai, if at all. Set to be the starting running back for one of the most prolific offenses in the NFL he would seem to be an obvious early round choice. However, many analysts and experts were convinced that rookie Donald Brown would be taking over that role sooner rather than later, and with good reason.

Addai had become the first rookie to rush for over 1000 yards in 2006; cracked 1000 again after Dominic Rhodes departed for Oakland in 2007, but had a rough year in 2008 barely breaking the 500 yard mark. When the Colts drafted Donald Brown from Connecticut in the first round the end appeared to be near for the Houston native.

While he may not be the key player that will win your league, Joseph Addai has turned into that all important second tier running back; that guy that will probably not win the game for you that week, but will not be the reason you lose either. His stats have not been amazing, but the fourth year running back from LSU has turned in a pretty respectable effort just about every week this season.

Stats through Week 11:

Att Yd Avg TD Targt Recpt Yd Avg TD FL
145 514 3.5 7 45 37 243 6.6 3 1

Tack on another touchdown through the air and Addai has been responsible for 11 touchdowns total, an average of one a week! Only one other running back in the NFL has accounted for more touchdowns. He’s averaging just over 50 yards a game on the ground and another 24 in the air along with at least three receptions. As Donald Brown continues to get fewer carries (4 each of the last two weeks) the numbers can only get better for Addai who has yet to gain a 100 yards on the ground during a single game this season.

In an offense like the Colts chances are better than good that Joseph Addai will continue to be a solid fantasy contributor with the potential to put up some respectable numbers in the games to come.

Games Remaining: at Houston, Tennessee, Denver, at Jacksonville, New York Jets, at Buffalo
