This is our version of the waiver wire. Here we will break down our weekly pickups by the size of the league because, well, it just doesn’t make sense otherwise. As with our Contentious Starts and Sits, please leave comments calling us out or adding to the waivers list. If your thoughts are solid we will stick you words right in the post…
Eight Teams
Laurence Maroney – NE, RB – Since Morris went down in week 6, Maroney has been a solid weekly fill-in. With Morris returning and Maroney fumbling, the worry was that he was going to lose carries, but Maroney has the hot hand and should retain his roll. He has now scored in five straight games; twice against the Jets on Sunday and is still only owned in 65% of leagues.
Justin Forsett – SEA, RB – Forsett didn’t have a good game on the ground on Sunday against the Vikings, but he did end up with a receiving TD. He’s going up against the Rams (146.4 rushing yards per game against – 25th in the NFL) this week, so expect him to have a big game.
Jerricho Cotchery – NYJ, WR – Cotchery was targeted 27 times over his last 3 games and he scored twice. That’s 9 more times than Braylon Edwards was targeted over that span, so I’m starting to think that Jericho is Mark Sanchez’s preferred receiver.
Ten Teams
Brandon Pettigrew – DET, TE – Pettigrew was targeted 8 times against the Browns on Sunday and he rewarded his team with 6 catches for 72 yards and a touchdown. Now that the Lions are allowing Matthew Stafford to throw the ball 40+ times per game every week, expect Pettigrew to have a couple more good performances.
Chris Chambers – KC, WR – Since picking him him up early this month, the Chiefs have used Chambers effectively to exploit Dwayne Bowe’s double coverage. With Bowe out on suspension he is going to see increased looks, but also increased coverage. Through three games with the Chiefs, Chambers has 249 yards receiving and 2 TDs. He is owned in 44% of leagues.
Pierre Garcon – IND, WR – Garcon has been a solid #3 receiver for the Colts all season. Being a solid #3 receiver on the Colts is like being a great #2 receiver on most other teams. Garcon had his first 100-yard game on Sunday, and he’s been targeted at least eight times in four out of the Colts last five games.
Twelve Teams
Rock Cartwright – WSH, RB – Cartwright had a very nice game against the Cowboys. He didn’t score, but he did have 140 total yards from scrimmage. The Redskins love to run the ball, and Cartwright is pretty much all they have now that Ladell Betts is done for the season. Even if/when Clinton Portis returns, expect Cartwright to get plenty of carries.
Brandon Gibson STL, WR – The rookie was targeted 17 times (no, that’s not a typo) on Sunday. Even though he didn’t have a very good game on the overall (5 receptions, 61 yards), this shows that the Rams are trying to get him involved as much as possible to see if he’s going to be their go-to guy moving forward. Even with Mark Bulger out 3-6 weeks, expect them to keep throwing to Gibson… a lot.
Mohamed Massaquoi – CLE, WR – He isn’t consistent enough to be considered in the 8 or 10-team groups yet, but he was targeted 12 times on Sunday and he caught 5 of them for 115 yards and a TD. Snag him if you are in need of a WR and none of the other guys mentioned here are available.
