Player Profiles: Is Miles Austin The Real Deal?

Miles Austin could either be one of those guys who comes out of no where one season only to let his fantasy owners down the next couple of years, or he could be the next big thing in the league. From what I have seen, he can definitely take over a game when Tony Romo can actually get him the ball, and he doesn’t seem to get any worse when he’s taking on the tougher CBs in the league. But can he be a reliable receiver on a consistent basis moving forward?

Numbers through Week 10:

TARGETS REC YDS YPR TD

I’m sure Austin was picked up in your league shortly after his 250 yard, 2 touchdown performance during the Cowboys Week 5 win over the Chiefs. But I’m also sure that a lot of fantasy owners are surprised by how consistent he’s been ever since then. He’s only had one 100-yard game since that game, but he’s scored in four of the team’s last five games.

He’s been targeted a little over six times per game, which isn’t a very high amount for a top receiver, but he makes the most of all of his receptions. He’s currently 14th in the NFL in receiving yards and tied for second with 7 TDs. He also leads the league in yards per reception.

Austin has easily been a top ten fantasy receiver this season. I wouldn’t say that he’s guaranteed to be a big time player in the league for years to come, but the fact that he’s a bigger receiver with good speed and good field awareness makes me think he has a better chance than a lot of the other guys who have stepped up pretty much out of no where in past seasons. I do think that he’ll still be Dallas’ #1 receiver going into the 2010 season.
